HOW TO CREATE A POSTER (WITH PROFESSIONAL QUALITY DESIGN) WITH 6 EASY
STEPS
1.
Determine your poster
format
2.
Brainstorm the Content
3.
Pick a suitable Template
4.
Use color to grab attention
5.
Choose graphics and typography
6.
Clean up any clutter.
Ø Determine your poster format:
Start by resizing your poster. This is an essential first step! If
you resize the poster later, all your text and images will come out stretched
and blurry.
Click on the Design
Tab, Slide Size, then Custom Size.
If you are creating a
poster for Mountain Lion Research Day or CSURF, use 48' (width) x 36'
(height). Other conferences and gatherings will let you know what size posters
are acceptable.
Enter in the required dimensions.
You will be prompted to
either Maximize or Ensure Fit of
your content due to choosing a custom slide size. Because you have no content
on your slide yet, choose Maximize.
Choose a Background
After
formatting the slide and before adding content to your poster, choose a
background. You can choose a solid or gradient color and also change the
transparency of the background. You can also upload an image to use for the
poster background. If
you do use an image, make sure it does not distract from the content or make
your poster look too busy.
Select
the Design Tab and then the Format Background button.
Adding Content
Before
adding content, add gridlines, guides, or ruler views to aid in the layout of
your content.
Select
the View Tab and then check the appropriate box.
Now you're ready to
start adding content! You'll use the Insert Tab to add images, tables,
charts, text boxes, and shapes to your poster. To create columns, select the
rectangle shape from the shapes box or create a colored text box. You can
overlay a textbox over a shape to add text.
Don't forget to use your
gridlines and ruler to keep spacing even and create a margin for the border of
your poster.
Ø Brainstorm the content:
To
learn how to transform one topic you want to produce content on into countless
content ideas, check out these five steps below.
1) Come up with an initial
topic and place it in Box 1.
This is the core theme or idea around which you'll
brainstorm. The next few steps will frame your reference point more
narrowly, so you can easily come up with a lot of related topics to
create blog posts, guides, graphics, and more. For the sake of example, let's
just use the topic "getting in shape" here as what we want to write
about.
2) Select Beginner,
Intermediate, or Advanced, based on how well-versed your readers are in the
subject matter (or how well-versed you want them to be).
In Box 2, simply drag the X
to the appropriate cell representing the audience for which your content is
intended. It's important to set a skill level because it's much different to
create an advanced guide to something than it is to walk someone through the
basics of a specific topic -- distinguishing which skill level is best will
help keep you focused on the goal of the piece of content you're creating.
3) Pick your content structure.
Content structure refers to
the way in which you'll organize your content. Let's say you pick
"list" for your first round of ideas. This means you'll ONLY think up
list-type content in your brainstorm later. In other words, you'd think of
topics like "10 Proven Ways to Get in Shape This Winter" instead of
"Why You Should Get in Shape This Winter."
If you find out after this
process is through that a list structure may not be the ideal way in which you
want to relay content, it's not a problem -- just go back to this box and
select a new style for your content.
4) Pick your medium/format.
The final way to narrow your thought process is by selecting the
specific medium or format you want for your content. Again, this can be
selected at random -- or one specific type you have in mind for your topic. You
won't have to think through all the
different types of content out there (and there's a lot). Rather, you'll think
of ideas around a single medium, like a blog post, video, or podcast.
Remember, some topics may lend themselves better to some mediums than others. Keep in mind whether the topics you're brainstorming really belong in a blog post. Or a video. Or a podcast. Or whatever other medium you're brainstorming around.
5) It's time to brainstorm!
Write as many headlines as you can until you run out.
With a nice, neat visual
reference (that's narrower than "think of anything"), you can begin
to write out as many headlines as you can in Box 5.
As you can see in the image
above, using the criteria I picked -- a list-based post that offers tips on
"getting in shape" for beginners -- my brainstorm led me to several
content ideas.
Ø Pick a suitable template:
Using Adobe Spark’s templates to create posters is easy.Whether you’re promoting a club or creating informational material, Adobe Spark breaks down the design process into easy-to-understand chunks. Using your own computer, mouse, and a reliable Internet connection, you can create free posters that get your message across in the most attractive and concise way. A pre-designed template has all of the basic components you’d expect to see. All you need to do is modify or add to the existing design to make the poster your own.
Ø Use color to grab attention:
Tips and Tricks for Using Poster
Paint
Use an easel with paper
held securely in place with clips. You don't even need to stick with paper; use
poster paint on wood; or even painting on to canvas is great for adding quality to
your piece and spreading your artistic wings.
Ø Choose graphics and typography:
·
Align your choice of typography with
the content of your poster.
·
Never use more than
three different kinds of type.
·
Don't forget about
the typeface weight.
·
Key information should
be eye-catching and easily visible from a distance.
·
Kerning is key.
·
Picking the perfect partner.

Ø Clean up your clutter:
Clean design aims to build
without clutter – putting the
message loud and clear.
Clean design is a design approach that’s free of clutter.
Being clutter-free can mean a number of things across different media –
websites, print ads, and posters all have different kind of clutter.
To understand clean design, we need to understand what
clutter is first. All visuals convey messages. For example, a red traffic light
tells you to stop – it’s a single, unambiguous message.
